Brain neurosurgery is diagnosis-led
Neurosurgical care begins with understanding the symptoms and neurological findings, then reviewing appropriate imaging and investigations. The goal is to identify the problem and choose an appropriate treatment pathway.
Examples of problems that may require neurosurgical assessment
- Brain tumors and other intracranial lesions
- Intracranial hemorrhage
- Subdural hematoma after head injury
- Hydrocephalus and cerebrospinal fluid disorders
- Selected conditions affecting cranial nerves or intracranial pressure
When symptoms need urgent attention
Sudden weakness, loss of consciousness, a seizure, severe or rapidly worsening headache, repeated vomiting, confusion or a sudden change in neurological function can require urgent medical assessment.
Treatment options
Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may include observation, medication, rehabilitation, minimally invasive or open surgery, or referral to another specialist service. Surgery is considered when clinically appropriate.
